It is always the Aesthetics and Functionality of the Structure
Architecture refers to the art and science designing buildings and other physical structures. Contrary to general belief of associating architecture with the construction skills, it is more about the aesthetics and functionality of the structure.
Architecture is traditionally associated with buildings and structures only. Architecture is thus both process as well as the final product that is the building or structure. The process involves planning, designing, use of materials, technology, textures, light, shadows, other practical aspects like cost etc. and of course the construction work itself.
Thus designed and constructed, buildings and structures reflects the aesthetic, environmental and functional considerations in the context of the particular culture. Every culture and society has its own unique style of buildings. Architecture thus also concerns with building style of a particular culture or artistic movement. The art and science has come to become a symbol of development of a civilized society.
The practice of architecture is therefore conducted in pursuit both pragmatic as well as communicative necessities of civilized people. Architecture encompasses both utilitarian and aesthetic goals of the society and people.
Historically civilizations have been identified by their surviving and existing architectures and monuments. The architecture is therefore also a reflection of political, social economic, ideological ecological and climatic aspects of the life in that culture and civilization. The architecture is an expression of society’s dreams, aspirations and its core values.
Relationship between architecture and us is not one sided but it is complementary. It is we who shape architecture and in return architecture also shapes our way of living and thinking. Through its own surpassing modes of expressing values, architecture stimulates and influences social life.
Architecture is a very old stream both as a stream of study and as practice. Ancient Greek and Roman architecture, Western architecture, Anatolian architecture, Arabian architecture, Egyptian architecture, Iranian architecture, Mesopotamian architecture, Syro-Palestinian architecture and an endless list proves this. Architecture has its own long and majestic history. The modern architecture is however influenced by philosophies. Rationalism, empiricism, structuralism, post structuralism, and phenomenology are the major influencers on architects and their approach to building design.
Coming along way, today architecture has to consider everyday needs of people and use technology to give a livable environment. Architects have been successful in bringing the issue of sustainable development into the mainstream.
